Commercial kitchens have been advised to invest in anti slip matting in order to avoid serious injuries in the workplace.
Jill Joyce, senior policy and technical advisor at the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health, explained how employees working in such an environment could be at risk if floor care is not considered.
"There have been serious accidents where employees have slipped on wet floors and severely burned themselves with hot cooking oil, while trying to break their falls," the expert stated.
It was noted that if surfaces become wet they can be hazardous to both staff and members of the public, with the entrance to buildings a particularly problematic area.
Anti slip matting was described by Ms Joyce as a device that "protects" individuals from sustaining major injuries.
Her comments follow a recent warning from the founder of personalinjurylawyers.co.uk Nicholas Tate, who claimed that businesses could be putting themselves at risk of being liable for accidents if they do not have health and safety procedures in place.
